Ted addressed the request for stop signs by neighbor to slow down drivers in the neighborhood especially along Lyon and North 7th Street. Ted acknowledges that neighbors have safety concerns with people or all ages accessing the Lyon Parks facilities on foot or bicycles. Ted stated that he met with commissioners and there is a need to get at least 3 commissioners to agree on the need for stop signs to slow down drivers. Ted encouraged neighbors to reach out to the commissioners.
Ted addressed the concern of neighbors in regards to the sidewalk on Lincoln and 3rd street. Neighbors are concerned about the width of the sidewalk that is slated to be installed and the 3 foot retaining wall.
Ted shared that the Springhill Marriot will be, at some point, vacating their location on the other side of the river due to the hotel slipping into the river. The hotel will be demolished and other plans are being made for that area. Ted expressed that neighbors in the Lincoln and 3rd street location are concerned that the same issue happening to Marriot will happen to their properties due to the embankment being cut away. Neighbors shared with Ted that they were not notified of the installation of the sidewalk that may be 5 feet wide. They found out by asking the people physically working on the project. Another neighbor stated that he was notified and the notification may have been missed by fellow neighbors.
Ted stated he is fighting for an engineering study to be done before installing the sidewalk on Lincoln on behalf of the neighbors effected.
A neighbor stated that the city were easy to work with when adressing a tree, on his property, that was causing a obstacle to trash trucks that kept hitting the tree.
Ted talked about the extension of the Watkins Museum in North Lawrence. Ted also talked about the work he is doing to support neighbors requesting a quiet zone. Ted is going to bring the letters he has written to commissioners about the museum extension and the quiet zone to the next meeting.
Ted explained that the crossing guard that was paid for by the railway on 3rd street was removed by the city.
A neighbor stated that he received a letter from the city in March stating that they were going to install the sidewalk in the location of Lincoln and 3rd street and other neighbors may have overlooked the notication.
A neighbor shared that he wants to set a meeting to discuss the sidewalk challenges with Ted outside of the NLIA meeting. Ted expressed that all neighbors need to be heard and there always needs to be compromise.
A neighbor asked if the neighbor in the Lincoln neighborhood wants the sidewalks. He stated “yes” however he wants it to be 3 foot and there are a lot of complications to the retaining wall and he agrees more thought needs to go into the project.
A neighbor asked if Ted has met the new city manager. Ted stated yes and he is looking forward to many meetings with him.
A neighbor asked for the keys issues and how to help and support. All in the meeting agreed slowing drivers down in North Lawrence, the sidewalk issues and flooding potential in the neighborhood need to be the focus of discussion with the city.
A neighbor stated on August 24th at City Hall, there will be discussion about light industry development on land around the airport and the neighbor followed up with the fact that this development has the potential to cause flooding in North Lawrence.
A neighbor spoke and stated that he is in support of stop signs at 7th and Lake, 7th and Lincoln, 7th and Lyon and one at 4th and Lyon creating 4 ways stops to slow traffic.
September potluck will be at 5:30pm on the 14th and the location will be either the Depot or Lyon’s Park. It will be announced on social media.
